Parents want to provide every possible opportunity for their children, but sometimes children are unable to participate in all the activities that parents have in mind for them. When a child is born with a disability, the initial news can be heart breaking to parents. One incredible mother had twice the heartbreak. Jamie is the mother of twin three year old boys, Alex and Lucas, who have both been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. As a result, Jamie thought she may never see her boys do the simple things in life that other children love like riding their bikes.

Alex and Lucas getting a little help from big brother
On Aug 10, 2009, thanks to a generous grant from Travis County Medical Alliance, Capital City Ambucs presented Alex and Luke with brand new adaptive tricycles (AmTrykes) that made riding a tricycle a reality. Jamie is so excited to brag that her 3 year olds can play and ride their Amtrykes all by themselves in the cul-de-sac with their older brother and all the neighborhood children. As the boys ride their Amtrykes, they are not only playing among their peers, they are also engaging in much needed exercise that strengthens the muscles in their arms and legs to prepare their bodies to perform other functional activities in their lives. Capital City Ambucs is dedicated to helping families realize their dreams of participating in the important typical family activity of riding bikes together.

Our Charter Celebration on April 5th, 2008 was a special night in the state capital of Texas. That evening, the newest AMBUCS chapter in the Southwest Region – Capital City AMBUCS - was chartered with 39 new members. The event started with a proclamation from Austin’s mayor Will Wynn that declared AMBUCS Day in Austin. It continued with the swearing in of the charter president, Laurie Albert, and the other officers and members. Sonya Rigano, the Southwest Region Director served as the presiding officer. There was an enormous amount of energy in the room as an Amtryke was awarded to a child with disabilities. District Governor Ed Fulbright and sponsoring chapter president Roma Rusk of the Mid Cities chapter aided in the ceremonies. Chapter Sparkplug Cliff Bauerle emceed the event, and thanked the members of his committee who all worked diligently on bringing this chapter to fruition.
